what is benzalkonium chloride

2023-04-11

1、What is benzalkonium chloride?

Benzalkonium chloride (BZK, BKC, BAK, BAC), also known as alkyl dimethyl bromide amine (ADBAC), trade name Zephiran, is a cationic surfactant. It is an organic salt, divided into quaternary ammonium compounds. 3 main uses of ADBAC are biocides, cationic surfactants, and phase transfer agents. ABAC is a mixture of alkyl bromide amine; alkyl has various even alkyl chains.

2What is benzalkonium chloride used for?

Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium preservative and disinfectant. Its role and use are similar to other cationic surfactants. It can also be used as an antibacterial preservative for pharmaceutical products.

3Is benzalkonium chloride the same as bleach?

There are many non-bleach products on the market, and one good alternative is quaternary ammonium compounds (Quat), of which benzalkonium chloride is an example. It does not remove limescale from showers and toilets. It is just bleach. Even when used as a bleaching agent, it can damage fabrics because it weakens the fabric.

4. Application of benzalkonium chloride.

Oil and gas.

Biocorrosion is the main danger in the oil and gas production industry. Benzalkonium chloride (BAC50 and BAC80) is used to control the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in waters rich in sulfates, causing a buildup of ferrous sulfide, which causes pitting of steel equipment and piping.SRB is also associated with good acidification, leading to the release of toxic H2S gas. Other applications of benzalkonium chloride include improving oil recovery efficiency through demulsification and mud breaking.

Disinfectant and detergent-disinfectant manufacturing.

Due to its non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-contaminating, and non-polluting properties, benzalkonium chloride is a major active use in disinfectants and disinfectant prescriptions for healthcare, personal hygiene, public sector safeguarding agriculture, and food supply. BAC50 and BAC80 safely incorporate germicidal and cleaning properties into hygiene products, enhancing penetration, removing dirt, and disinfecting surfaces.

Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics.

Benzalkonium chloride has a margin of safety for use in a wide range of leave-on skin disinfectants and infant hygiene wipes. BAC50 is widely used as a preservative in ophthalmic, rhinological, and otologic agents and an emollient and adsorbent in optimized formulations.

Water treatment.

Benzalkonium chloride-based formulations are used in water sewage treatment and swimming pool algae removal.

Aquaculture.

Benzalkonium chloride improves sanitary conditions and reduces the need for antibiotics in aquaculture. Benzalkonium chloride is used for water treatment, removal of fish parasites, general site disinfection, and prevention of infectious fish and shellfish diseases.

Wood protection.

World environmental issues are safer in wood protection, with biodegradable benzalkonium chloride replacing persistent chlorinated biocides. Bioactive carbon has excellent bactericidal and algae-solubilizing properties and is also very effective against other complex organisms.

Pulp and paper industry.

Benzalkonium chloride is a general biocide used for slime control and odor management in pulp mills. It can improve paper handling and give strength and antistatic properties to paper products.

Textile industry.

Benzalkonium chloride is used to protect natural fibers from molds and fungi and as an insect repellent. Dyeing acrylic fibers with cationic dyes is also a permanent delaying agent.

Leather industry.

Benzalkonium chloride inhibits the growth of leather molds and mildew and promotes the softening, wetting,, and leather dyeing.

Horticulture and household.

Benzalkonium chloride is very effective against molds, mildews, mosses, fungi and algae and can be used to clean and prepare all types of surfaces: greenhouses, roofs, paths, wood preparation.

Chemical industry.

Quaternary ammonium compounds are used in chemical applications in the chemical industry, such as precipitating agents, oil/water, and air/water interfaces for their ability to position themselves as phase transfer catalysts, emulsifiers/re-emulsifiers, etc.

Polymers and Coatings.

Quaternary ammonium compounds are widely used in the coatings industry (paints, wood treatment, electronics, etc.) as antistatic agents, emulsifiers, and preservatives).
